Special Interest: The Clock House was constructed in 1879 to the design of Norman Shaw Architects, one of the most influential architects of the last decades of the 19th century, known most commonly for his country houses/commercial buildings. The Clock House is Grade II Listed and shares group value within the Royal Hospital Conservation Area. The area is predominantly residential in use with varied streetscape. Buildings of outstanding historic and architectural interest in the conservation area include the RoyalHospital and the well preserved late Georgian and Victorian terraces on Tite Street bearing attractive and well preserved late Georgian and Victorian terraces. The heart of the Conservation Area is the Royal Hospital itself.
Scope of Professional Services:
Heritage Architecture Ltd were commissioned to undertake the following:
- Historic context Appraisal: Heritage Architecture Ltd undertook research to assess the development of the site/historic context, including the preparation of a map sequence and earlier built form. The team carried out a ground level appraisal of the contextual relationship of buildings, vistas and conservation areas.
- Schedule of Significance: Heritage Architecture Ltd carried out a room-by-room analysis of The Clock House to ascertain the relative significance of the surviving features of the building, this included later insertions and alterations. The schedule of significance of The Clock House depicted the extent of special interest of the buildings, which informed the proposed alterations and extensions.
- PPG 15 Justification Statement: A justification statement was formulated for the alteration and extension of the Clock House encompassing the test required to satisfy PPG 15. An appraisal if the proposed extension and an assessment of the likely visual impact of the proposed development on the character of the Royal Hospital Conservation Area formed part of the justification statement.
