Special Interest: 52 Princes Gate forms part of a grand symmetrical terrace of housing, constructed in the mid 19th century, located within the prestigious Knightsbridge Conservation Area. Sir Charles James Freake, Architect and builder renowned for many famous 19th century buildings in west London, including Eaton Square constructed 49-58 Princes Gate. The Knightsbridge Conservation Area has a late Victorian character and is dominated by a number of grand individual buildings, most notably the Royal Albert Hall. Also characteristic is an area of large scale terraces and squares from the mid 19th Century, set around leafy squares interconnected by short streets and pedestrian routes.
Scope of Professional Services:
Heritage Architecture Ltd were commissioned to undertake the following:
- LIMITED HISTORIC APPRAISAL: HA took into account the “historical overview” provided to us, we then undertook supplementary research regarding 52 Princes Gate. This research included searches in the local and national archives for published and primary sources, background information regarding the building and architect and an appraisal of significance in accordance with the Communities and Local Government Circular 01/2007, Revisions to Principles of Selection for Listing Buildings and taking into account Statutory Criteria and General Principles used by the Secretary of State.
- SCHEDULE OF SIGNIFICANCE: Heritage Architecture Ltd undertook site inspections of the building and a room-by-room identification of significant features and spaces. The schedule of significance depicted the building’s current state in relation to its architectural and historic interest which in turn informed the proposed alterations and the assessment of impact of the proposed development
- PPG 15 JUSTIFICATION STATEMENT: Heritage Architecture Ltd formulated a justification statement to accompany a listed building consent application which included an appraisal of the impact of the proposed development in accordance with PPG 15.
