Stephen has spent his entire professional career in conservation and historic buildings, in both the public and private sectors of the profession. He joined the Frizzell Partnership - a practice established for over 40 years - and developed the practice from four employees to twenty; largely with historic building work. After taking over the practice, the work evolved to include planning and legislative matters including important commissions in urban planning, Townscape Analysis, regeneration and appraising the impact of tall buildings on the historic environment. The work of this practice is now equally divided between conservation projects and on new developments in sensitive areas. Unusual building types, imaginative re-use are of particular interest and many difficult problems have been solved through application of knowledge, experience and verve.
The companies head office has always been based in London, boasting a number of high profile projects and wide spectrum of clients. Earlier work by the practice included the appraisal of impact on conservation areas, for example, Camden High Street and commissions for many local authorities. Recently the firm has benefited from an expansion of the scope of its commissions to include determinations of special interest for an unlisted building at the University of Leeds; appraisals of contribution, that an unlisted building made to the character and appearance of the conservation area in Whalley Range; numerous visual impact assessments for tall buildings in Manchester and London. Numerous planning appeals including the appraisal of impact on conservation areas for Transport for London and were part of the successful Design Team bid involving Victoria Station, Manchester’s largest regeneration project in more than a decade. . The company has enjoyed many years of successful projects; this achievement was reflected through the opening of its Manchester Office, in spring of 2006. The Manchester practice is now sharing the success of its London counterpart, including several projects as part of the regeneration of the city conservation areas following the bomb damage: dismantling and moving of the oldest building in Manchester - the Shambles pubs which involved obtaining the de-scheduling of an Ancient Monument.
Heritage Architecture Ltd has a well developed team of professional staff, which is constantly growing. Most recently, in 2007, Heritage Architecture Ltd opened an office in Milan, Italy. Although in its early stages of development, it is hoped that this European venture will be an exciting challenge for the team and open new doors of opportunity for the future. |
