Newbury Town Centre Conservation Area

11th December 2023

The town of Newbury in West Berkshire can trace its origins back to the 11th Century. The town’s history is legible in the meandering medieval roads and the narrow passageways that intersect them, in the great variety of historic buildings which line the thoroughfares, and in the characterful alms houses where the sick and needy of the town once resided.

Heritage Architecture were given the opportunity to examine the history, development and architectural character of the town in great detail in the Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan we prepared for the Newbury Town Centre Conservation Area on behalf of West Berkshire Council

The work, which was conducted alongside GL Hearn who are preparing the Masterplan for the town, provides guidance for existing and new development to help preserve the special character of the town for years to come.
